Mamelodi Sundowns have placed themselves in a commanding position in the title race after going five points clear at the top after the 3-0 win over Polokwane City at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday afternoon.
After beating Rise and Shine in Seshego in mid-week 1-0, Miguel Cardoso’s troops followed it up at home with another three points to add pressure onto second placed Orlando Pirates – who have a game in hand, when they face Stellenbosch on Tuesday in Athlone.
In what’s been riveting race that’s likely going to the wire, it marked their 19th win in 27 games, in a league campaign where they only tasted defeat one – away to Golden Arrows.
Cardoso brought Tashreeq Matthews back into the XI along with Thapelo Morena for Peter Shalulile and Khuliso Mudau respectively, adding more width to their attacking approach.
But it was Iqraam Rayners who broke the deadlock, heading home a teasing delivery from Matthews just after the half hour mark to put the home side completely in control of the fixture.
In the second half, Sundowns adding a second via Tashreeq Matthews, with a stunning effort cutting in from the left to smash home a unstoppable effort past Lindokuhle Mathebula.
The visitors had they chance to pull one back from the spot, but captain Puleng Marema slipped and sent his effort over the post and Sundowns went on to add a third via substitute Nuno Santos after being teed up by Brayan Leon.
Masandawana are now only ive goals behind Pirates in the goal-difference which also could play a part come end of the season.
