Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele believes it’s interesting times for South African football with the 2025/26 Betway Premiership title race being close and that his side might as well spoil the party.
Cele’s sentiments come ahead of the sold-out league affair between his side and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld this evening.

Chiefs had their unbeaten run halted by Siwelele FC in their last outing and currently sit in third position on the table with 47 points in 26 matches. This is the same position Amakhosi are trying to consolidate in order to play continental football next season.
Meanwhile, Sundowns are at the summit of the standings with 64 points in 27 games with a two-point lead to their nearest title chasing rivals Orlando Pirates who won 2-0 away at Stellenbosch on Tuesday evening.
Cele admitted to Chiefs media department that he’s expecting the Brazilians to go all out in their pursuit of a ninth straight league title at the venue they haven’t lost at this season.
He added that Chiefs might as well be the party pooper as they are also chasing their own targets.
“Of course, if you look at the recent history, they have been a team that’s been dominating the league in terms of winning trophies and especially the league,” said Cele.
“So, they’re going to want to [come out with guns blazing] because now they have someone who’s competing with them, which is our rival Orlando Pirates and us also, considering our recent history becoming closer and closer, step by step.
“So, things are interesting for South African football at this moment. And of course, I think they’re going to want to clinch this title again.
“But we might as well maybe spoil the party for them, you know I mean, trying to pick up ourselves, because we’re also in our journey. So it’s games you want to win.”
