Mamelodi Sundowns vice-captain Ronwen Williams has opened up about past CAF Champions League heartbreaks that ultimately served as crucial lessons for the team.

The Brazilians are set to face off against AS FAR Rabat in the final second leg this Sunday at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00.

Masandawana hold a slender advantage heading into the clash, having won the first leg 1-0 at Loftus Versfeld last weekend courtesy of an Aubrey Modiba strike.

Williams admitted that being eliminated from their most coveted competition numerous times in the past taught them valuable lessons, including the importance of avoiding conceding goals at home.

He added that the squad is heading into the decisive match with a clear understanding of exactly what is required to finally lift the prestigious trophy.

“I think we have learnt valuable lessons along the way our path, journey – the lessons that hurt,” said Williams as per the Sundowns TV.

“We remember how it was tough for us to overcome that hard taken pain. And this season, we know how to grind out results, we know how to not concede at home.

“So, I think this season in this final, we’re going there with a clear understanding of what we need to do to win this tournament.”

Meanwhile, Williams also noted that South Africa faces numerous societal challenges, stating that a victory would allow the nation to temporarily forget its troubles and celebrate together, as the team is ultimately playing for the entire country.

“We know that we have a lot of problems and issues in our society, so for that moment we know that the country’s happiness, peace will be down to us,” he added.

“And we know the importance of having a good game and lifting the trophy. That moment, they will forget the problems and celebrate Mamelodi Sundowns.”
