Bafana Bafana should not have been awarded a penalty in their warm-up friendly against Nicaragua, according to former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani.

This comes after South Africa failed to beat Nicaragua, who are ranked 131 in the world and 71 places below them in a frustrating 0-0 stalemate at Orlando Amstel Arena.

In the 42nd minute, the hosts were awarded a questionable penalty after attacker Kamogelo Sebelebele appeared to have dived in the penalty area.

One could almost say it was justice for the Nicaraguans with replay clearly showing that the Orlando Pirates attacker had indeed stepped on Justing Cano’s foot and not the other way round.

The resulting spot kick was missed by Lyle Foster as he struck the woodwork despite Adonis Pineda being well beaten.

Hlungwani has since expressed disappointment in the Lesotho referee for awarding an incorrect penalty against Nicaragua.

“Sebelebele got a penalty there. Was it correctly given? Was this the correct decision?,” Hlungwani said on Soccerzone.

“You can see he dived there. Who did what there? You can see that Cano there wearing number five, he did nothing wrong.

“You see Sebelebele stepping on his leg and then he dived.

“This is deceiving the referee, simulation. As you can see there, he is stepping on Cano there.

“So, incorrect decision to give a penalty by the referee.”
