Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has opened up about his team’s performance in the preparation match against Jamaica and their readiness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against co-hosts Mexico.

Broos’ charges played out to a 1-1 draw against the Reggae Boyz, with Lyle Foster netting the opening goal before the opponents found an equaliser.

South Africa now has only a few days left to prepare for Thursday’s crucial global showpiece opening game against El Tri.

Broos admitted he was unhappy with his team’s display against Jamaica, adding that they are still adapting to the high altitude in North America.

However, the veteran coach noted that the remaining days before the World Cup kick-off will be crucial in helping the squad fully acclimatise.

“I have to be honest, I was not happy, I was not happy with the performance,” said Broos, as per Mazola Molefe.

“Maybe that was certainly a reason that yes, we still need a few more days to adapt to that high altitude.

“I saw yesterday the players who couldn’t make efforts that they wanted to make anymore.

“So, that is certainly because of the high altitude here. So, again that is not really a problem.

“I’m sure with the four days that is still remaining, we will be ready that we will be ready for the game on Thursday.

“People were asking what are you going to do there on the 1st, blah, blah, blah. I know what it is, I had the experience as a player 40 years ago.

“And this is no difference with now, altitude is altitude. So, I know that we had to be here so many days before because we needed that adaptation and be careful also with what we do in training but again the boys will be ready on Thursday.”
