The South African Football Association have decided that former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane is set to take over as new Bafana Bafana head coach to succeed Hugo Broos.
Mosimane, 61, has been without a club since parting ways with Iranian side Esteghlal FC in January 2025.
Lately, South Africa’s most successful coach has been focussing on his own club, the Pitso Mosimane Youth Football side – buying the status of a Gauteng Development League team.
However, Mosimane will now return to the sidelines after the National Executive Committee approved his return for a second spell with the national team.
“The South African Football Association’s (SAFA) National Executive Committee has approved the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana coach,” SAFA stated.
“SAFA held a successful NEC Extraordinary Meeting at SAFA House on Saturday, 8 August 2026 and the Members backed Mosimane to return to the South African senior men’s national and replace Hugo Broos, who stepped down a few days ago.”
However, SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan said a few “loose ends” still need to be sorted following the NEC Extraordinary Meeting.
“The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week.”
Mosimane was first in charge of Bafana after the 2010 FIFA World Cup, signing a four-year contract but ws dismissed after failing to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
He also worked as assistant for Carlos Alberto Perreira and Joel Santana.
