Bafana Bafana legend Steven Pienaar has explained why he believes South Africa will beat Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match.

The match, which will take place on Thursday at Estadio Azteca with kick-off scheduled for 9:00 pm, will be a repeat of the 2010 opener, which was hosted by South Africa.

Pienaar says Bafana will come out victorious with a 2-0 scoreline, adding that he believes Hugo Broos’s team is better than his own side in 2010.

He added that the current Mexico team is not as good as the one they played 16 years ago at FNB Stadium.

“I might get shot in the head if I say this, but I’ll say it, it’s gonna be 2-0 for Bafana Bafana,” said Pienaar.

“And I think this team [SA] is much better than the team we had. And if I look at the Mexican team, they’re not as good as the team from 2010.

“So, I really think we will win 2-0.”

Pienaar and other former Bafana players from the 2010 World Cup are currently in Mexico, having played a friendly match against El Tri legends.

Asked about the match where they lost 5-2, he said, “It was tough but a great experience with the guys just to go out there again, to get the legs going.”

“At the end of the day, we’re here to support Bafana Bafana and Mexico as a country. It’s been amazing.”
