Mamelodi Sundowns veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango has reflected on the enormity of winning the second CAF Champions League title saying it was overdue.
In a season where they didn’t win anything domestically, Sundowns defeated ASFAR of Morocco over two legs to lift the continental title for a second time making the Ugandan the most decorated player in South Africa.
He has 18 titles that include 12 league trophies, four domestic cups and two Champions League medals.
The Brazilians had only come close after winning it the first time in 2016 and reached the finals the previous season which was preceded by appearances in the semi-finals.
Speaking in the Mamelodi Sundowns Magazine edition 16, Onyango said the Champions League represents to him results of persistence.
“What it stands for me is the persistence and determination of this group,” said Onyango.
“We had the quality every season but it was never enough without making history. So we kept pushing, kept knocking on the door year after year, believing that one day it would open for us and eventually it did.”
The 41-year-old added that the feat also comes with the pressure to maintain their competitive levels.
“Winning the Champions League brings responsibility,” added Onyango.
“Everyone now expects you to perform at the highest level every time you step on the pitch. That pressure is heavy but it also strengthens us and keeps us sharp.”
