Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye says the South African Football Association (SAFA) needs to hire Pitso Mosimane and make Rulani Mokoena his assistant should Hugo Broos leave his post after Bafana Bafana’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bafana’s fairytale run at the event came to end on Sunday when they lost 1-0 to Canada in the Round of 32, their first time in four appearances at the tournament. Broos had said before the tournament that he’d retire after the World Cup but his latest comments have left some doubts.

The former Kaizer Chiefs winger says if that’s the case the FA need to keep the core of the players and rope in Mosimane, while also putting more focus on the club’s youth structures.

“Can we keep this group of players because you can even check the age average,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.

“Yes Mshishi [Themba Zwane] is older, Ronwen Williams too. Guys like Tebza [Teboho Mokoena] must be kept, there has to be continuity.

“But now we don’t have to sugar coat things and let’s not run from the truth because it’s very important. We need to bring people who understand the game.

“So to answer you bring Pitso Mosimane there. He has achieved more than any coach in South Africa. The brand of football that he is playing is what’s helped [Mamelodi] Sundowns to be where they are and it’s also the same one that has also benefitted the national team.

“And bring Rulani [Mokwena] next to him as an assistant coach so they can work together. Also Pitso must identify coaches for U23, U20 and U17 and teach the same philosophy.

“I’ve been asking when was the last time the U23s played. So you have them play consistently during the FIFA breaks even the U20s, so that there is continuity for those players same in countries like Brazil.”
