Mamelodi Sundowns utility player Thapelo Morena has spoken about closing in on a major club milestone ahead of the new season.

The 32-year-old is currently recovering from the injury he sustained towards the end of last season, which ruled him out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Morena is expected to return to action in the new campaign with Masandawana looking to bounce back domestically after ending last season without a trophy, while also aiming to defend their CAF Champions League title.

The experienced versatile player is on the verge of making his 350th club appearance, having been with the Tshwane giants since joining from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2016.

During his time at Sundowns, Morena has made 344 appearances, scored 25 goals and provided 37 assists.

Morena said his main hope is to remain injury-free so he can help the club challenge for more silverware and enjoy a more successful campaign than last season.

“I think, to be honest, I’m really blessed and honoured to be part of the Mamelodi Sundowns,” said Morena.

“And for them giving me what they gave me throughout all the seasons.

“And for this season, I’d like to say I’m always praying to God for not getting injured, to try and also give to the team and deliver more to the team than the previous season that I’ve done.

“And create more opportunities, help the team to get more trophies than we had.

“And hopefully things will go the way I’m praying and pleading to God that it should go.”
