iDiski TV analyst Junior Khanye says in his opinion Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos failed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup currently on-going in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Broos was appointed in 2021 and has improved the team’s rankings. He led Bafana Bafana to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and finished third in the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast. However, the team was eliminated at the last 16 stage at the 2025 tournament in Morocco.

The Belgian also guided Bafana to the 2026 World Cup, the team’s first appearance at the showpiece in 16 years where they also made history by qualifying for the knockout phase of the competition for the very first time.
Khanye says though he doesn’t take the coach’s achievements away, he felt Broos came into his job when South African domestic football was improving.
The former Kaizer Chiefs winger also believes Broos should have done better in America with the players he has at his disposal.
“For me personally it was a failure but take nothing away from the coach he has done well for himself because something like this has never happened to us,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.
“It doesn’t happen often. We went to the World Cup before like in 2002 so just to tell you the coach has done well. But the coach was lucky to have come to South Africa at a time when Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns were on top of their game. We were competing in continental football it was very easy for him to identify players.
“I mean you can go to one team and identify eight starting players it’s very easy for you and you go to Orlando Pirates and identify another quality eight players, very easy for you. Check how other coaches were coaching before and check how the PSL was before. I’m talking about the likes of Pitso [Mosimane], Alberto Pereira, Jomo [Sono] were nowhere to be seen in continental football.
“Now Sundowns is competing in the Club World Cup and have also recently won a star and even before winning this star, they’ve been winning the league, year in year out. They were competing in the Champions league and Pirates being knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final.
“The coach was full of choice. He should have achieved more with the group of the players; that’s just me and like I said football is a game of opinions and that’s my opinion. And I know there are people who will say the coach did well and I won’t say they are wrong.”
