Durban City chairman Farook Kadodia has revealed why he went for Khalil Ben Youssef as the side’s new head coach ahead of the new season, naming the coach’s tactical abilities and qualifications among his reasons.
City enjoyed a fairytale return to the big league last term finishing in eighth place in the Betway Premiership and also clinching the Nedbank Cup which helped them qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup for the upcoming campaign.

Meanwhile, Youssef was snapped up by the KwaZulu-Natal-based outfit after two seasons at Kaizer Chiefs. During his tenure he helped Amakhosi break a decade long trophy drought while he was still assistant coach and also reached the group stage of the Confederation Cup plus a top three finish in the league as a co-coach.
Speaking on Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube on Wednesday, Kadodia admitted that he was convinced by the work the Tunisian did at Chiefs.
“Basically I said here is a coach that is tactically astute and basically he comes from a big background of analysis and he’s transferred that to his coaching qualification,” said Kadodia.
“And I think the important thing is that yes hard work in this game is important. And we basically judged the work that was done, what we believe his contribution was at Kaizer Chiefs to qualify for this job.
“And the fact that he’s a foreign coach he worked two years in this country he knows a bit about the local football.”
Kadodia Reveals Mandate
As far as the targets laid out for Ben Youssef are concerned Kadodia said the coach has to either match what the side achieved last season or better it.
“Coach Khalil knows exactly what the club achieved last season,” added the chairman.
“He’s got to match that or in fact better it. There’s no pressure – give us a Cup in the cupboard and keep us in top 8. That’s the mandate.”
