Astute tactician Pitso Mosimane has reacted to Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie’s backing for the Bafana Bafana head coaching role.
As things stand, it is not clear who will lead Bafana as Hugo Broos’ contract comes to an end this month and SAFA not providing clarity on the team’s future coach.
Broos has guided Bafana to two back-to-back AFCON tournaments finishing third in one of the editions.
The Belgian has also led the team to their first FIFA World Cup appearance in 16 years and guided the side to a historic second round qualification at the event held in Mexico, USA and Canada recently.
McKenzie publicly threw his weight behind Mosimane saying he is the best man to take over from Broos. Meanwhile, Mosimane has admitted that he is one of the candidates approached for the post.
He revealed on #MSWOn947 with Robert Marawa that he had lengthy conversations with the minister about his manual on youth football while it was still a draft so it makes sense why McKenzie has backed him.
“Well, I know where he comes from,” said Mosimane.
“He comes from a position where I have given him this draft of manual to say you are the minister of sport how can we collaborate and work together in developing football holistically?
“I am not saying results are not important because if we don’t win, it’s a problem. We have to win, right? But how can we contribute and collaborate on this. I would say this is a curriculum of how we need to train players.
“He says, no, no, my job is to develop the country, make sure that all the sports codes are addressed and trained well. I love what you’re doing. And he comes emotionally from there and I understand as a politician that’s what he wants.
“His role is to develop football. He doesn’t care that much about who’s winning and all that. And he’s got a role to play in sports, that’s why he talks about VAR he talks about all these things.
“So, I guess he’s coming from there because we had a very long chat for me to open up and tell him what is this [manual] about, and then he said, ‘Does the football federation understand what you have written?’ I said, ‘Yes, I’ve done the manual. I think you’ve seen it on socials when it was still a draft. And I presented to Desiree Ellis. I presented to Molefi Ntseki, I presented to the coach educators, and the president and the CEO’.
“So that’s what I gave the minister and maybe minister is coming from there to say, wow and why don’t you help the country?”
