Durban City midfielder Brooklyn Poggenpoel was supposed to have been sent off earlier in the first half against Orlando Pirates, according to former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani.
The 26-year-old was given his marching orders in their 2-1 MTN8 quarterfinal defeat to the Buccaneers at Orlando Amstel Arena this past weekend.
With the scores still locked at 0-0 in the 35th minute, the former SuperSport United midfielder was given a second yellow before a red was dished out after he cluttered on Tshepang Moremi in the 18-yard area from the back.
This also led to a spot kick for the home side, which Patrick Maswanganyi tucked away neatly.
Speaking on Soccerzone, Hlungwani is of the opinion that Poggenpoel should’ve seen red after 20 minutes for his tackle on Cemran Dansin.
“A penalty was given,” he said.
“Now, the law says if the player is challenging for the ball, and a penalty is given, no more yellow card.
“Here we see Jelly Chavani giving a yellow card and a red card, which was incorrect for a second yellow card.
“But, Poggenpoel was supposed to get a yellow card on the 24th minute which was second to the red card, so he was sent off very late.
“He was supposed to go out on the 24th minute for his tackle on Dansin.”
Pirates marched on and are on course to make it five MTN8 titles in a row and equal Kaizer Chiefs’ record of 15 titles. They take on Sekhukhune United in a two-legged semis tie.
