Bafana Bafana and Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya says he believes he was overlooked by former South Africa coach Hugo Broos during his time playing in Major League Soccer (MLS).

Makhanya joined Rangers from Philadelphia Union ahead of the start of the current season and has quickly established himself as an important part of the Scottish side’s defence.

The centre-back has made 10 appearances across all competitions for the Scottish giants.

The defender was included in South Africa’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but did not feature during the tournament.

Makhanya feels having Pitso Mosimane as a new coach is a fresh opportunity for him to represent the national team.

He feels he was not given a chance after Broos was often critical of the standard of MLS and the long travel distances players had to endure when joining up with the national team.

“Honestly, I wasn’t really nervous about the whole change of coaches,” Makhanya said in the interview on SNAWA on Metro FM.

“I just thought it was an opportunity for a fresh start in the national team cause I always felt like I’ve always been overlooked by the previous coach.

“So, for me, that’s how I’m seeing it – a fresh start and fresh opportunity for everyone to raise their hand and do what they can do for the national team.”
