All PSL Stars Outside Bafana Set For AFCON

While 21 players plying their trade in the Premier Soccer League were named in the provisional squads for the CAF Africa Cup of Nations, that number has been significantly whittled down with final squads being announced.

In total, and excluding those in the South African squad, 16 other players contracted by PSL teams will be competing this month in the Ivory Coast.

Three PSL-based goalkeepers will meet in Group A – with Sekhukhune United’s Badra Ali Sangaré included in the Ivory Coast squad, Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali in the Nigerian selection, while Manuel Sapunga from Polokwane City is in the Equatorial Guinea team.

In Group B another goalkeeper, Orlando Pirates’ Richard Ofori is in Ghana’s squad, while Kaizer Chiefs’ defender Edmilson Dove will represent Mozambique.

No PSL players feature in Group C (Senegal, Cameroon, Guinea & the Gambia) or Group D, where Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Angola will compete.

Of course 20 of Bafana Bafana’s squad are locally based, but there are nine other PSL players who will feature in Group E, all for Namibia, namely: Peter Shalulile (Mamelodi Sundowns), Deon Hotto (Pirates), Edward Maova (AmaTuks), Lloydt Kazapua (Chippa), Riaan Hanamub (AmaZulu), Lubeni Haukongo (Cape Town Spurs), Ananias Gebhardt (Baroka), Bethuel Muzeu (Black Leopards), and Joslin Kamatuka (Maritzburg United).

Group F will see two players – Sekhukhune’s Rally Bwalya is in the Zambia squad, while Tanzania have included Abdi Banda from Richards Bay
