CAF Sanctions Senegal & Morocco After AFCON 2025 Final Incidents

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced disciplinary sanctions against Senegal, Morocco, several players, and team officials following incidents that occurred during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 Final in Morocco.

According to CAF, the actions violated the CAF Disciplinary Code, particularly rules related to fair play, integrity, and sporting conduct.

The Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) received multiple penalties due to unsporting behavior by players, coaching staff, and supporters during the AFCON 2025 final.

Coach Suspension and Player Bans:

  • Senegal head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw has been suspended for five CAF matches for unsporting conduct that brought the game into disrepute.
    • He was also fined USD 100,000.
  • Iliman Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye was handed a two-match suspension for inappropriate behavior toward the referee.
  • Ismaila Sarr also received a two-match CAF suspension for unsporting conduct toward match officials.

Heavy Fines for FSF:

  • FSF was fined USD 300,000 for the misconduct of Senegal supporters, which CAF said harmed the image of African football.
  • An additional USD 300,000 fine was imposed for unsporting behavior by Senegal players and technical staff.
  • FSF was also fined USD 15,000 after five Senegal players received yellow cards during the match.

CAF Disciplinary Actions Against Morocco (FRMF):

CAF also penalized the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF) for incidents involving players, officials, ball boys, and supporters.

Moroccan Player Suspensions and Fines:

  • Achraf Hakimi received a two-match CAF suspension, with one match suspended for one year, following unsporting behavior.
  • Ismaël Saibari was suspended for three CAF matches and fined USD 100,000 for misconduct.

Fines Imposed on Morocco Football Federation:

  • FRMF was fined USD 200,000 for the inappropriate conduct of stadium ball boys during the AFCON final.
  • A further USD 100,000 fine was issued after Moroccan players and technical staff entered the VAR review area, obstructing the referee’s work.
  • The federation was also fined USD 15,000 due to the use of laser pointers by supporters inside the stadium.

CAF also reviewed a formal protest submitted by the Moroccan Football Federation. The complaint alleged that Senegal breached Articles 82 and 84 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations.

After examination, the CAF Disciplinary Board rejected the protest, ruling that no regulatory violations by Senegal were proven in connection with the AFCON 2025 Final.
