Makgopa Opens Up On Lepasa ‘Rivalry’

Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana striker Evidence Makgopa has opened up on his relationship with fellow forward at both club and national team level, Zakhele ‘Zakes’ Lepasa.

The Pirates duo are currently at the Africa Cup of Nations with Bafana in Ivory Coast. They have both featured in Bafana’s matches so far with Makgopa starting and Lepasa coming off the bench. At club level this season Makgopa has scored four goals in the DStv Premiership and Lepasa three.

The 20 year old towering forward spoke to iDiski Times writer Lorenz Köhler from Bafana’s base in Korhogo about how he and Lepasa actually lean on each other especially when they get bashed by fans and see each other as brothers more than competitors.

“It’s a good one because even you can see when I’m with him we always laugh,” Makgopa told iDiski Times.

“Sometimes you have to accept ’okay, this guy I’m competing with but at the end of the day he is my brother’. We have to be brothers at the end of the day. Even at club level, it’s like when one is playing, the other one has to support and show love.

“Sometimes we chat and say ‘okay, take these people [who talk badly about us] out of your mind and pull yourself up’. Sometimes… like my mom and I talk regularly about things but at this moment, you’re in this place. I can’t even call her because she doesn’t have WhatsApp or anything. And you have to end up picking yourself up alone.

“But as strikers, me and Zakes, we know better. You can have a good game as a striker, but with no goals, ‘you’re shit, you’re not a good striker’ [to the public], it is what it is – sometimes we talk about it. We say ‘Eish bra it’s tough, we have to do something’.”
