Amajita head coach Raymond Mdaka has reacted to his side clinching the 2026 COSAFA U20 title saying consistency was key.
Mdaka’s charges defeated the hosts 2-1 in the regional tournament’s final on Sunday in Matola to defend the title they won last year.
By virtue of reaching the final, the South African junior side along with the Mambinhas have also qualified for the 2027 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted in Ghana, where Amajita will also get a chance to defend their continental title.
Amajita won all their five matches in Mozambique, scoring 13 goals with Steven Mendes contributing six of those to win the Golden Boot. They also conceded just three goals which saw Takalani Mazhamba walk away with the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.
Meanwhile, Mdaka was happy for the team’s achievement saying the country is blessed to have the talent it has at junior level.
“You need consistency of some kind,” Mdaka was quoted on Safa.net.
“And yes, it will not be easy but sometimes when you win you need to maintain that consistency of winning, winning and winning. It says to the country that you have got the talent, when given time and the opportunity to prepare, we can do better.
“It’s a blessing to have this kind of talented players. Even in the previous edition, honestly, we had very good players and I’m happy we have got an opportunity now to make a better team compared to the one that we came with here.
“But keeping the trophy, taking it back home where it was for the whole season is something else and I really appreciate and give credit to the boys and every supporter who gave us energy almost every day.”
