Bafana Bafana midfielder Thabang Monare has revealed that former teammate Lebogang Manyama was one of the people who understood what it meant for him to be part of the AFCON squad.
Monare made the team in what some people believed was one of the surprises in Hugo Broos’s final AFCON squad, having not featured in the national team since March 2022 and not being a regular at his club Orlando Pirates this season.
But Monare has played three matches at the tournament so far and helped Bafana reach the semi-finals for the first time in 24 years.
He told iDiski Times senior writer Velile Mnyandu in the latest edition of the newspaper that Manyama knows his journey and he encouraged him to enjoy the moment.
“I got a message from Lebogang Manyama and he said the same thing,” Monare told iDiski Times.
“Out of the blue, he said, ‘Embrace the moment, you come a long way’. It gets very emotional, I guess at the moment it’s hard to tell what’s going on.
“The only focus is where we want to be as a nation and where we want to be as a squad representing the nation here.”
