Bafana & Nigeria Starting XIs Announced

Bafana Bafana and Nigeria have announced their starting XIs for this evening’s African Cup Of Nations semi-final match at Stade de la Paix in Bouake.

South Africa have a chance to reach the AFCON final for the first time since 1998, 26 years ago, while Nigeria could make their first final since 2013 when they lifted the trophy in South Africa.

Bafana finished second in their group before eliminating Morocco by 2-0 in the Last 16 and knocking out Cape Verde via penalties in the quarter-finals.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria find themselves in the semis after beating Cameroon 2-0 in the Round of 16 then knocked out Southern Africa side Angola out by 1-0

The last Bafana appearance in the AFCON in 2019 was ended by Nigeria in the quarter-finals in Egypt, when Stuart Baxter’s side lost due to a late goal by Williams Troost-Ekong.

Bafana have also lost to Nigeria in the 2000 AFCON semi-final (2-0) and the 2004 group stages (4-0), making their record a dire reading to date.

Overall in competitive fixtures, these two sides faced each other 12 times, with Nigeria winning seven, while four ended in a draw and Bafana winning only one fixture.

However, South Africa will draw some confidence from the fact that Hugo Broos has reached his second semi-final after knocking Ghana out with Cameroon in 2017 before beating Egypt in the final.
