Nwabali – Why I Wanted To Face Bafana

The first 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final between Nigeria and South Africa is one of the most anticipated matches but it is also a wish come true for Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

The event in Ivory Coast is the Chippa United goal minder’s first AFCON and he has played in all of the Super Eagles matches so far, keeping four clean sheets.

Nwabali told iDiski Times in edition 138 how impressed he has been with the talent displayed by Premier Soccer League (PSL) players at the event, especially the goalkeepers.

Bafana Bafana captain and keeper Ronwen Williams was the hero is South Africa’s quarter-final victory over Cape Verde, saving four penalties to get his team to the semis. However, since the group stage the 27 year old Nwabali has been itching to face competitors from his domestic league.

“This is football, South Africa and Nigeria might meet,” Nwabali told iDiski Times after the group stages already.

“And I wish to play against them because seeing the likes of Mshishi Zwane and Ronwen Williams, I want to share the same stage with these guys.

“To play against them outside of the club in different countries where we don’t understand each other’s language, I want to play against these guys.”

The match between the Super Egales and Bafana is scheduled for 19:00 on Wednesday in Bouake.

You can read Nwabali’s full interview with Lethabo Kganyago in edition 138 available on the website.
