Al Ahly have parted ways with head coach Jess Thorup after missing out on the CAF Champions League.
The Egyptian giants started the 2025/26 season with former Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro at the FIFA Club World Cup.
However, the Spaniard only lasted for seven games and was sacked after just three months and opted to bring in Danish coach Thorup.
The former Augsburg coach started off well, with six wins in eight games and lifted the Egyptian Super Cup, beating rivals Zamalek 2-0.
However, things didn’t continue as rosy afterwards, as they then lost five of their next eight league games. Al Ahly also got kicked out of the CAF Champions League, losing 4-2 on aggregate to ES Tunis.
In the league, Al Ahly missed out on the top two spots, with rivals Zamalek claiming their first title since 2021/22.
Overall, Thorup won 18 of their 36 games in charge, losing nine and drawing nine – which resulted in the club opting to part ways with the coach on Thursday.
