Senegalese referee Ndiaye Maguette, who was accused of match fixing in the Ghana-Bafana Bafana by the South African Football Association, has been called up to the AFCON.
Maguette was the main figure around SAFA’s protest of their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier that saw the Black Stars overtake Bafana on the log and qualify for the play-offs.
Ace Ncobo, SAFA’s independent advisor had claimed that 90.9% of the incorrect decisions made in the 1-0 win by Ghana were against South Africa, while Danny Jordaan revealed their was irregular betting around the game.
However, despite the controversy, FIFA dismissed SAFA’s case and Maguette has seemingly not been demoted by CAF either.
He’s one of 34 referees called up by CAF for the upcoming AFCON in Cameroon next month, as per the list below.
South Africa’s Victor Gomes is also on the list, while Zakhele Thusi Granville Siwela is one of 31 assistant referees to be called up.
The AFCON will have VAR, with both Ndiaye and Gomez also being listed as VAR referees.
