Folz – Why I Left FIFA For Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz has explained why he left FIFA to join Masandawana.

Despite his young age, Folz has already spent several years in Africa, coaching Botswana giants Township Rollers, as well as South African sides Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu FC.

When he left the country South Africa he went to coach Horoya AC before making the big move to FIFA to join their High-Performance department, where he worked with Arsene Wenger.

The UEFA Pro Licence holder returned to South Africa at the beginning of the season, joining the club as assistant coach to head coach Manqoba Mngqithi and senior coach Steve Komphela.

Folz explained that he was happy at FIFA, but when Sundowns came calling he couldn’t resist the prospect of working with a top club in Africa and competing in at the high football level.

“To be honest, I was very happy with my role at FIFA; I had a lot of responsibilities, working with good people on meaningful projects. But when Sundowns came calling, so many elements came into play,” Folz told Sundowns Magazine.

“The prospect of working with a top Club in Africa, playing numerous games and competing in several competitions was incredibly appealing. I also have great respect for the Motsepe family and what they have done for South African football. Their level of passion, dedication and enthusiasm for the Club is truly inspiring.”

Folz also admitted that the prospect of working alongside Mngqithi, who had praised him at his previous clubs, was also key for him

“Additionally, working with Coach Manqoba Mngqithi was a significant factor in my decision,” he added.

“I share many football ideas with him and I believe that our combined vision can elevate the team further.

“The opportunity to collaborate with a coaching staff that values innovation and player development aligns perfectly with my philosophy.

“I see this as a chance to contribute not only to the Club’s success but also to the growth of the players and the entire organisation.”
