Former Kaizer Chiefs star David Obua is set to be appointed as the head coach of URA FC in his homeland, Uganda.
According to reports in Uganda, URA FC parted ways with two members of their coaching staff to clear a path for the arrival of Obua as its new coach.
The Pulse Sports Uganda reported that negotiations between the club and the former Cranes captain are progressing, having been given the authority to select at least one assistant coach to join the coaching staff.
Obua is expected to sign a two-year contract, but whether that comes before their first home game of the season remains unclear, reports said.
Obua recently obtained an advanced coaching qualification, the UEFA A Diploma, which he obtained in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Prior to embarking on his coaching journey, Obua, in September 2018, accepted the position of assistant coach at Maroons FC, signing a three-year contract.
Obua made his name in South Africa, becoming one of the first signings under coach Ernst Middendorp in the 2005/06 season along with Ntokozo Sikhakhane, Louis Agyemang, Serge Djiehoua, Ditheko Mototo and Jimmy Tau.
This after he impressed Chiefs scouts with Uganda when he sent Hans Vonk the wrong way in the FIFA World Cup/ Africa Nations Cup qualifiers on 26 March 2005 against Bafana Bafana, cancelling out Quinton Fortune’s penalty before Steven Pienaar scored the winner later on in the match at FNB Stadium.
Obua scored in both Soweto Derby matches against Orlando Pirates in the 2005/06 season, though Chiefs could not retain their league title, finishing third as Mamelodi Sundowns were the champions.
When Chiefs hosted its annual awards, Obua was named Chiefs Player of the Year, Online Player of the Year, Amakhosi Magazine Readers Player of the Year and won Goal of the Year for his free-kick when Chiefs were defeated 1-3 by Sundowns on the 22nd February 2005.
That season Chiefs, despite failing to retain its league title, won the ABSA Cup when they beat Pirates in a penalty shootout in Durban.
In the following season, Obua was there when Chiefs beat SuperSport United in the SAA Supa 8 also in Durban, before leaving at the end of the 2008/09 season.
