Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad Athletic Club secured 1-1 draw in a fiery Casablanca derby against Raja Athletic Club at the Stade Larbi Zaouli on Friday evening.
Coming into the Botola Pro clash, both sides came under immense pressure, more so Mokwena than Ricardo Sa Pinto, who had just been appointed last month.
Mokwena’s side were sixth, and Raja 11th – a far cry from the usual standards of the two biggest clubs in Moroccan football.
In the football on display on the night showcased why – as it was a scrappy foul-ridden affair devoid of flair and attacking quality.
Pape Sakho put the reigning league champions ahead just before the hour mark with a toe-poked effort inside the area.
It appeared it was set to be a frustrating evening for Wydad but they managed to grab an equaliser through former PSV Eindhoven winger, Mohamed Rayhi, who was introduced by Mokwena as a substitute shortly before a powerful effort the flew past Anas Zniti.
However, the point suited neither side as Wydad moved up to fifth with 16 points from 11 games, while Raja has 14 points.
RS Berkane will have the chance to further extend their lead at the summit with a game in hand as they’ve amassed 23 points from 10 games so far.
