Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Athletic Club head coach Rulani Mokwena has been unveiled as new head coach of Algerian Ligue 1 champions Mouloudia Club d’Alger.
Mokwena returns to coaching with the Algerian giants who won the league and Super Cup this past season and succeeds Tunisian Khaled Ben Yahia who parted ways with the club upon the expiry of his short-term contract, as first reported by iDiski Times.
The 38-year-old spent last season at Wydad after his exit at Sundowns, but parted ways with the club after the end of the Botola Pro season after they missed out of the qualification of the CAF Champions League, this after finishing sixth in the season prior to his arrival.
However, he has still been in high demand, with Pyramids, Zamalek SC, Orlando Pirates, Al Shahaniya and a Saudi Yelo League side all linked with his services in recent weeks.
However, the MCA project, as they return to the Champions League again this upcoming season, having reached the quarter-finals, being eliminated by Orlando Pirates – has appealed the South Africa – who was adamant he’d like to continue in Africa this campaign.
Sources have confirmed Laurențiu Reghecampf, Patrice Carteron and Manqoba Mnqgithi were also in the running for the job, that has become an appealing one since their recent resurgence in the Algerian Ligue 1.
After a ten-year league drought, the club has now won the league in consecutive seasons, and he is set to join former Premier Soccer League coaches Josef Zinnbauer (JS Kabyile) and Sead Ramovic (CR Belouizdad) who finished second and third respectively in the 2024/25 campaign.
