Riveiro And Gomes On Al Ahly Radar

Al Ahly have shortlisted outgoing Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro and former Zamalek SC boss Jose Gomes as they look to find the successor of Marcel Koller.

Koller was relieved of his duties this week after 11 trophies won since his arrival in September 2022 and he received a special send off by the club as a sign of gratitude for his achievements, winning back-to-back CAF Champions League titles, among the triumphs.

Several names have already been linked to the club’s hotseat from Carlos Queiroz to former Red Devils coaches, Pitso Mosimane and Rene Weiler.

Gomes, formerly with their fierce rivals Zamalek, who won the CAF Confederation Cup and Super Cup during his solitary season in Africa before his move to the Saudi Pro League, has also been sounded out.

Sources have confirmed this move is not likely due to Gomes not willing to leave Al-Fateh, whom he joined in December on a lucrative contract.

iDiski Times can confirm members of the club’s board have reached out to Riveiro’s camp, while interest from Morocco and Tunisia has already been rebuffed from the Spaniard, who has been in high demand due to his exploits with the Soweto giants.

Riveiro’s exit at the end of his three-year contract in June, has already been confirmed and with the Egyptian giants looking for a new leader before the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup which kicks off on 14 June – he’s among the major contenders for the job.

He’s won five domestic trophies since joining Pirates, while still in contention for the league and Nedbank Cup, after their Champions League semi-final exit this week, and beat his suitors in the group stages of the competition in Cairo.
