Wydad AC head coach Rulani Mokwena has admitted he’s “in talks” with Bongani Zungu to bring him to Morocco, but he has also offers from elsewhere.
Zungu, 31, announced he was leaving Mamelodi Sundowns for the second time via social media in May shortly after the league ended, and was followed out the exit door by Mokwena who was sacked for allegedly having a fallout with the club’s Sporting Director Flemming Berg and for not achieving certain targets.
The 37-year-old mentor has since sealed a big-money move to North Africa at the Red Castle, and after roping in five technical team members, Mokwena looks set to be reunited with the midfield enforcer.
“I can only talk about Zungu, with Zungu we are talking, he has got interest from elsewhere but Zungu is very special, ” Mokwena told Marawa Sports Worldwide.
“I have known Bongani Zungu for a very long time and he is a very, very good player and he still got a lot to offer and he is a good person too.
“That’s very important for me in working to align and I said that even yesterday to the players – the most important thing for me is to work with good people and that’s very, very important.
“And Bongs (Zungu) is a very good person, good heart, well raised. Incredible family, incredible mother, incredible siblings.
“So, he is someone I have a lot of respect for and someone I would love to have here but let’s see whether it’s possible because sometimes it’s got a lot more to do with many other things than just football.
“So, we are still talking and hopefully something comes up.”
Mokwena has assembled a technical team, mainly comprised of South Africans – Allan Freese, Sibusiso Makitla, Sibusiso Mahlangu, Sinethemba Badela and Sean Louw will all look to aid Mokwena get his Botola Pro League off to a great start.
