Senegal have parted ways with head coach Aliou Cisse after the country’s Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture did not approve a new one-year extension.
Cissen, 48, had been in charge of Senegal since 2015, guiding them to their first-ever Africa of Nations title in 2021.
The Senegalese Football Federation announced the decision on Wednesday, after the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Ms. Khady Diéne Gaye did not approve a new one-year deal and his previous contract ran out on 31 August.
“The Senegalese Football Federation informs the public that it received this Monday, September 30, 2024, a confidential letter from the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Ms. Khady Diéne GAYE, not approving the one-year renewal amendment to the contract of the coach of the national A team, Aliou Cisse.
“These are the reasons: the failure to achieve the objectives assigned under the amendment of November 7, 2022, which expired on August 31, 2024 (victory at the CAN 2023 and qualification for the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup), the regression of our national team in the FIFA rankings and the risk of disaffection between our national team and the Senegalese in general.
“The authority deduced as a consequence of its decision that Mr. Cisse was no longer covered by a contract duly approved by the State of Senegal and could no longer lead the national team from that moment on.
“The Minister finally invited the FSF to take the necessary steps to ensure Senegal’s participation in the qualifying phase for the CAN 2025.”
