Shalulile Fires Sundowns To CAFCL KO Stages As Group Winners

Mamelodi Sundowns beat five times CAF Champions League TP Mazembe to finish top of Group A.

The clash in Tshwane started with high intensity both teams looking to settle as quickly as they could.

Sundowns created the best opportunity in the 21st minute after a good inter-play between Themba Zwane and Lucas Ribeiro but the South American effort flashed across the face of goal.

After 30 minutes of football, a cooling break was needed in a hot afternoon at Lucas Moripe Stadium, both coaches got a chance to give some instructions.

After 37 minutes, Downs combined well, Peter Shalulile played a through pass to Lucas Ribeiro who was brought down by Mazembe captain Kevin Mondeko and the referee awarded the penalty, Shalulile stepped and converted from the spot.

After 45 minutes of football Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed blew for halftime. Sundowns went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

After 55 minutes, Sundowns threatened with Zuko Mdunyelwa carrying the ball to eliminate a few players of Mazembe and played a through pass to Lebohang Maboe who played a good cross, but Ribeiro fluffed the chance.

58 minutes gone, Abdelmounaim Boutouil was fouled Sundowns awarded a free kick. Teboho Mokoena stepped with a thunderbolt Badara Faty was equal to the task conceding a corner.

Mazembe caught Sundowns on the 63rd minute on a counterattack Joel Beya outpaced Boutouil and took a shot which was deflected on Mosa Lebusa for a corner kick

With 16 minutes to go, Sunowns combined once again Teboho Mokoena and Thembinkosi Lorch but Mokoena put the ball over the crossbar.

In the 83rd minute, Oscar Tshikomb made the breakthrough, Ronwen Williams quick from his line played a sweeper role and stopped the attack.

Sundowns secured the three points and with that winners of Group A, with Mazembe joining them in the next round.

Pyramids and Nouadhibou played out to a 2-2 draw in Cairo which did neither side favours but it proved a valiant showing for the group stage debutants from Mauritania who secured third place ahead of the Egyptian Premier League side.
