Mamelodi Sundowns have overtaken Al Ahly as the highest-spending club in Africa in 2024, according to FIFA’s global transfer report.
Sundowns made some big signings, with the likes of Iqraam Rayners, Keagan Johannes, Kobamelo Kodisang and Arthur Sales joining in the summer window, while Tashreeq Matthews, Matias Esquivel, Thembinkosi Lorch and Tashreeq Matthews all joined in January 2024.
While the exact figures of many transfers are not in the open, Sales’ deal cost the club R62 million, according to TransferRoom – the site which facilitated the move, similar to Esquivel’s arrival.
As Sundowns tries to build a team to bring him their second CAF Champions League title and be competitive in the FIFA Club World Cup, they have overtaken Egyptian giants Al Ahly for their output in 2024 (January – December).
Al Ahly sit in second place, followed by Esperance Sportive de Tunis – the club who bought Elias Mokwana, while Youcef Bilali and Abdramane Konaté also joined them in 2024.
Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad Athletic Club appear in fourth position after their heavy squad revamp when the former Sundowns coach arrived in Morocco.
