Bafana B Beat Egypt In CHAN Qualifiers

Bafana Bafana B side have progressed to the second round of the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers after defeating Egypt 3-1 in the second leg of the first round, and 4-2 on aggregate.

South African captain Neo Maema opened the scoring in the 15th minute after missing some chances earlier in the half followed by Yandisa Mfolozi in the 26th minute.

The hosts’ consolation came off the boot of Mohamed Elsayed Khalil Abouelenein two minutes after the half hour mark, but Siphelele Luthuli restored Bafana’s two-goal lead from the penalty spot in the second half.

It took five minutes for Bafana to triple their lead into the second stanza. Maema found Victor Letsoalo in the box and latter was brought down by the Egyptian goalkeeper and earned a penalty. Luthuli converted from the spot to extend the lead. Letsoalo could have scored Bafana’s fourth but was denied by the keeper in the 68 minute.

The sides had played to 1-1 draw in the first leg in Bloemfontein last week with Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki making some changes to the squad calling Letsoalo, Mondli Mpoto and Levy Mashiane for Nduduzo Mhlongo, Naledi Hlongwane, Monnapule Saleng and Azola Tshobeni.

South Africa will face Malawi who saw off Comoros 4-0 on aggregate in the second round of the qualifiers in May 2025 with the finals of the tournament set for later in the year in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
