Basadien On Future As Big-Three Speculation Continues

Bafana Bafana and Stellenbosch FC left-back Fawaaz Basadien says he would obviously like a move to one of the big clubs in the country but it’s not on his control.

Basadien, 28, has been elected to captain the national team in tomorrow’s friendly against Tanzania, geared up to prepare Bafana for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and beyond, with several new faces in the squad.

With Basadien among the more experienced players in the group, his future has been hotly debated in the media as one of the standout players in the league over the past couple of seasons.

Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have all been linked with the Stellies star – but he’s taken a modest approach about the rumours swirling around ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

“I get this question often, for me, as I said before it’s about focusing what I can control, obviously all the rumours and this exists and it’s nice to have that as a player,” Basadien said.

“But my main focus is to… whatever opportunity I get to play, is to do well, keep doing what I’m doing, keep improving each day, it’s my main focus, whatever happens, in the background is just part of the rumours being created.

“For me in football, there comes a time where you want to achieve greater things and play for the so-called big clubs, or make big moves, it’s just about the timing when it’s right for you – for me, my main focus is not about wanting to move now. Obviously I would like it, but my main thing is just to keep on playing and improving each day.”

Basadien scored seven goals with eight assists to his name in 46 games for Stellies across all competitions as they finished third in the league and reached the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup.
