Benni McCarthy believes that unity was Bafana Bafana’s strongest weapon at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
Though the team started the tournament with a loss they went as far as finishing third and collect a first continental medal in 24 years.
Coach Hugo Broos had assembled a locally-dominated team that impressed with their skills, passion and results.
Former Bafana striker McCarthy believes the biggest weapon that most people seemed to ignore was the brotherhood among the players, saying it allowed them to show up for one another on the pitch and put the team first.
“I think you’re forgetting the most important [thing],” the Manchester United first team coach told iDiski Times.
“There seemed to be a togetherness about that team – a brotherhood. They were together and it was not a team based on individual superstars, they were all good in their own right.”
“But they were together, and they played for each other, and they worked for each other, as a unit, and that brought success to the team. So yeah, that was a really good trait to have.
“And they showed all the ingredients of being able to continue on that path now that they find themselves on.”
