Bafana Bafana legend Siyabonga Nomvethe wasn’t expecting so much crowd in the clash of the legends between South Africa and Mexico, also explaining why Siphiwe Tshabalala took the penalty.

The Bafana legends suffered a 5-2 defeat against Mexico legends in what was the remembrance of the 2010 FIFA World Cup opener in South Africa. Two legends Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Tshabalala scored the two goals for South Africa.

But what was shocking was the supporters that came out to watch the game as the stadium was packed to the rafters.

Speaking with Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000, ‘Bhele’ explained that the packed stadium gave him the feeling of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

“I was not expecting that the stadium will be packed like that and it gave me flashbacks that this is 2010 and we are starting our World Cup,” Nomvethe said.

“I said we starting where we left off, but we enjoyed, people came in numbers. South African people we were engaging with them and Mexicans obvious they were showing us how they do things and their culture.”

‘Why I Let Shabba Have The Penalty’

Nomvethe also explained that he was meant to take the penalty but Siphiwe Tshabalala nicely asked him to give it to him and with his experience, Bhele was okay with that.

“I took the ball, I thought I was gonna kick it. He asked for it but as professional players we can’t fight for penalty and I am experienced,” he added.

“I’ve been in the industry. I have to give it to him, he said please can I kick it, I said don’t worry baba, have it my friend.

“If you want to kick it and have confident, we can’t fight about it, so I let him kick it.”
