Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has explained why he opted to start Themba Zwane in their international friendly against Panama on Friday evening.
Zwane was selected behind Lyle Foster in attack, with Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi on either wing, despite his lack of starts at Sundowns since his return from injury.
A bold call from Broos but he explained it’s due to see the level of the veteran playmaker who became a cornerstone of his starting line-up before injury struck.
“I think the pnly surprise is that Themba is in the team, I think when he’s with us we have to let him play and we’ll se how far he is at the moment,” Broos told SABC Sport.
“There’s still a game in June, but we don’t have so many games to let him play, so it’s important to know where he is physically, technically, football, we know there’s no problem but physically.
“He’s not playing much at Sundowns at the moment, so we will not let him play 90 minutes either, I don’t think he can do that, but just to see him play, it’s very important for us.”
The 36-year-old is making his 52nd appearance for the senior national team this evening, where he’s scored 12 goals with three assists.
