Broos Expresses Concern Over Sundowns Stars

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has expressed concern over the Mamelodi Sundowns players, who form the core group of his squad selection.

Broos confirmed on Monday afternoon in day one of their camp that Grant Kekana was ruled out due to a hamstring injury suffered in the Nedbank Cup final defeat to Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

He was replaced by Kaizer Chiefs defender Given Msimango for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe, but Khuliso Mudau, who appeared to be suffering from a shoulder injury, is likely to be fit for the Super Eagles on Friday.

He confirmed the highly-rated full-back is recovering, along with Aubrey Modiba, Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas, Ronwen Williams in separate niggles.

“Those four players have little problems but will be ready for [the Nigeria game]. It’s amazing that from the six injuries, it’s six players of the same team, Sundowns, they had many injuries this season,” Broos said.

“Everybody knows, one of the reasons is certainly the overloaded program. They played a lot of games, but what is interesting is that 75% of the injuries are groin and hamstring injuries, and I think it has to be something more than [too many] games.

“I hope that the medical staff of Sundowns can find the reason for that because next season it will be exactly the same, they will have the same overloaded program, playing PSL, MTN8, Champions League, there’s even Club World Cup at the end of the season.”

The Belgian coach who led South Africa to third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations says he’s concerned these recent injuries my become more serious next season, when he needs the players available for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

“I am a little bit worried because in September, October, and November we have probably AFCON qualifiers. Imagine… imagine the same situation as what it is today and I miss six players – everyone knows the basics of Bafana Bafana is Sundowns players.

“It worries me a little bit that we could have a situation in September of having five, six players we can’t select because of injuries, so I really hope their medical staff can find the problem because again, these same injuries are coming back every time, groin and hamstring, that can’t be only from overloaded programs.

“So it worries me a little bit, it’s not a problem for now but again, we have very important games in front of us and I hope, I really hope that in September, October or November for those important games, that we don’t have those problems.”

South Africa take on Nigeria on Friday in Uyo before returning to host the Warriors in Bloemfontein next Tuesday.
