Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos admits he was scared when the referee halted the game after they went 2-0 up against Congo Brazzaville.
South Africa secured an emphatic 5-0 win over Congo in Gqeberha to move them to the brink of qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Teboho Mokoena, who has been left out the Mamelodi Sundowns squad for five consecutive games in the build-up to the international break netted the opening two goals, with the second a stunner from ranger before three pitch invaders halted the game.
This was due to not having adequate security at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium which was quickly rectified before play resumed and Bafana continued to run riot.
“I can only be happy after a performance like this, I was a bit afraid after 20 minutes when the referee decided to stop the game because we were in good momentum, and you never know after the break after 10,15 minutes what will happen,” Broos told SABC Sport.
“But the boys took immediately the same mentality they had in the beginning of the game, it was just a fantastic game and a fantastic performance also.”
“You know we’re working together for many months, years, everyone is happy with everybody, I have a fantastic group, the mentality is fantastic and quality is there also. Tuesday is again a match, so tomorrow we forget the 6-0.
“We will try to achieve six [points] from six and come back from Congo with [2025 AFCON] qualification, it will be a different game certainly on a different pitch also, so we’ll see but if do the same performance like today, we can win, we can achieve that.”
South Africa can qualify with three points on Tuesday with two games to spare in Group K for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
