South Africa head coach Hugo Broos feels the Morocco game could be the perfect chance to win back the support of the nation.
Bafana Bafana have seen their crowd attendance dwindle in recent years, more specifically in the Gauteng region where they have been predominantly based.
And ahead of the clash against the Atlas Lions, a french journalist probed Broos about the lack of interest from the public and what can be done to remedy the issue moving forward.
“The opportunity is there and we have take that opportunity, we played our home games in empty stadiums in the last two years,” Broos said when asked about the lack of support.
“It’s not nice for a team to come on the pitch and you look around and there’s nobody, you need that public in certain moments of the game, certainly like an opponent against Morocco, with the public, you can do more.
“That is one and secondly again, you have to win back that public, Bafana is not very popular [right now] in South Africa, so maybe it’s the best opportunity to win back the public and to play in the next months in stadiums where they will be crowds and supporters.”
While captain Ronwen Williams and Siyand Xulu also spoke about the lack of support on social media and in general terms, iDiski Times fielded the coach a question about how he will try and balance entertainment for fans and getting results needed for the ‘hype’.
“We will not be dominated for 90 minutes and let Percy only see the centre circle and the rest of the team are on the other side of the field, no,” Broos stated.
“That is not what we want, we want to play football, we want to play with Morocco and have a good game and then we’ll see where we end. But that is the goal for tomorrow, playing a good game, creating chances and not be dominated like we were one year ago.”
