Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has revealed he had a meeting with Khuliso Mudau in an attempt to remedy the issues that saw him absent from training over the past month.
Mudau, 30, is widely considered one of the finest full-backs in Africa and has been an integral part of the Sundowns and South Africa national team defence in recent years.
However, he was absent from pre-season training after the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup over a contractual dispute – amidst interest in his services in North Africa and Asia.
While he’s returned to training with Masandawana, and talks over a new deal now in motion, Broos left the player out of his 23-man squad to face Lesotho and Nigeria in the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“First of all, stay in contact with the club and see what really the situation is, then asking the club – if I can help, if I should help to solve the problem? So I got the agreement of the coach of Sundowns, that I could have a meeting with Khuliso,” Broos said.
“So I had a meeting with Khuliso, and I told him he was right in some things but he was not right in others things, like for example, not going to training, you don’t solve a problem by not going to training – even when there’s a disagreement between you and the club.
“This is an obligation of a player, if you don’t play, that’s something else, you can say okay, I won’t play until the problem is solved, but you have to go to training… so I think he’s training agains and I hope, as soon as possible, it’s solved, he’s the best right back of this country and one of the best in Africa.
“So you can’t… it’s difficult for me not to have him in my team, so it’s a duty for Bafana Bafana coach, to also help solve a problem like that.”
Mudau has racked up 157 appearances for Sundowns, scoring seven goals, with five assists – while winning eight trophies, since joining the club from Black Leopards five years ago.
