Broos – Why I Recalled Adams

Bafana-Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says all is forgiven regarding Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams’ previous transgressions and he believes the player has learnt his lesson.

Adams was recalled to the senior national team for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin next week.

This is after being dropped from the squad that faced Congo Brazzaville in the AFCON qualifiers last year for disciplinary reasons while still in the colours of Stellenbosch.

Broos emphasised that the move to drop Adams was never meant to hurt the 23 year old and that his displays at Chloorkop so far also made it easier for him return.

“I hope he learned a lot about what he did and that was what I wanted to achieve [by dropping him],” said Broos on SABC Sport.

“He knows what he did, you can’t do that that. When you have a call-up for the national team you do everything to come, to get there.

“I said it already in the moment itself I wanted to just to show him Jayden this is not the right attitude to have. But he’s quality and Jayden as a player I like him. He is a good player he plays good again with Sundowns.

“So I didn’t see a reason why I shouldn’t call him up now again. I was afraid that he wouldn’t play so much because you know Sundowns has a lot of players and they play a lot of games also.

“He has managed to be a standard [regular] player for the moment and therefore I’m very happy.”

Adams has scored two goals with one assist in 12 games since joining Sundowns from Stellenbosch in the January window in a reported R15-million transfer.
