Former Mamelodi Sundowns forward Anthony Laffor made the bold statement that Liberia will beat Bafana Bafana and qualify for African Cup Of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The seven-time DStv Premiership winner spent 17 years in South Africa, playing for Jomo Cosmos, SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United.
He’s made over 300 appearances for Mzansi clubs and lifted 10 trophies during his time in the country, including the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup.
The 38-year-old, who represented his country 46 times, is part of the Lone Stars traveling squad and was asked by iDiski Times whether Liberia can surprise Bafana.
“Yes, of course because Liberia is capable of beating Bafana Bafana,” Laffor responded.
“They’ve been preparing very well for this game. Also come to think that there’s three teams in the group. Liberia will get a win in South Africa and a maybe a draw at home and we draw against Morocco.
“The good thing for Liberia is to get a draw or a win in South Africa and it is possible. Bafana Bafana is not that an extra-ordinary team, with all due respect.
“But Liberia is my country, we gonna do everything we can to show the weakness of South Africa.”
Laffor also confirmed that head coach Ansumana Keita has asked him for intel on Hugo Broos’ side.
“There’s no distance between the national team of Liberia and me. I’ve been visiting the training grounds and I’ve got a good relationship with the head coach and the football association,” he added.
“Definitely they’ve been asking me questions about South Africa football and Bafana Bafana. Don’t forget I still have friends that are playing for Bafana Bafana and I know the inside and outside of South African Football. I spent 17 years in South Africa.”
Liberia will meet Bafana this afternoon at Orlando Stadium before facing them on 28 March in Monrovia. Two wins would secure qualification for next year’s AFCON.
