Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has referenced the career of Themba Zwane when discussing why he’s not too disappointed by his Bafana Bafana snub.
Mabasa won the DStv Premiership Golden Boot with 16 goals, with 10 coming in 13 games for Pirates since his return to the club after a six-month loan at Moroka Swallows.
Last season, he spent a season-long loan at Sekhukhune United which failed to reignite the form that brought him to Pirates from Bloemfontein Celtic.
But it showcases the tumultuous journey Mabasa has endured to his thriving 2023/24 season where he’s now preparing to lead the line for Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final against Mamelodi Sundowns.
“In all honesty, not really [that disappointed], yes each and every player wants to play for the national team but I believe if it’s meant to happen, it will happen, you know at some point,” Mabasa said ahead of the Nedbank Cup final.
“You look at Mshishi what happened with him, he wasn’t selected at all and now he’s being selected each and every camp – so for me it’s not something that I think about quite a lot, yes I’ve been doing well.
“But yeah like I said, if it’s meant to happen it will happen, so I’m not worried about it at all.”
Overall, Mabasa has scored 19 goals with three assists in 32 games across all competitions this season.
