Mamelodi Sundowns senior coach Manqoba Mngqithi has hailed Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos for believing in his team, but also insisted his side can still offer more.
Bafana knocked out Africa’s highest-ranked team Morocco on Tuesday night after Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena scored for SA, while Achraf Hakimi missed a penalty for the Atlas Lions.
After the match, Mngqithi has insisted the country needs to rally more behind their football national team because they have really turned up at the tournament in Ivory Coast.
“We did say from the beginning of the tournament that maybe this one is not for the North Africans,” he said on SABC1.
“Because indeed we showed today by taking out number one in the African continent and we spoke very early in the beginning of this match to do believe. It’s not the time to be pessimistic, it’s time to trust and support our team and our team has delivered.”
Mngqithi also hailed Broos for his loyalty to his own players, but insisted Bafana still have even more to offer.
“He believes in his team. In all his interviews you could feel that belives this team can do it,” he added.
“And I personally believe this team can do it. I was worried with some injuries of [Khuliso] Mudau and [Mothobi] Mvala before the match, but when we saw that they were going to play this match I said ‘this team must never be taken for granted’.
“And to be honest, this team showed the quality and class but I still believe there is more that this team can provide.
“This team has got more capacity than what we offered. We still give away some chances but we are improving as the tournament progresses.”
