Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena says they need to go further than the class of 2019 at the Africa Cup of Nations.
South Africa failed to qualify for Cameroon 2021, and the previous participation saw them knocked out in in Egypt by Nigeria, with a late goal from William Troost-Ekong in a 2-1 defeat, which Mokoena feels needs to be bettered with the current generation.
Straight after his Man of the Match display in the win over, what was the last North African team in the competition, and the number one ranked side on the continent, the Mamelodi Sundowns star stated they are hungry for further progression.
“Honestly, the expectations from us? Is to take it one game at a time, because this tournament, we all can see… nobody can say who’s going to win it,” Mokoena said.
“So the top five teams in Africa are all out. So it’s up to us or the other teams to take the trophy and in 2019, we reached the quarter-finals. So it’s not a surprise to South Africans, the quarter-finals are not new to us.
“So we must take it a step higher because we need to take the national team to a better place than we found it, so yeah, that’s our aim and goal as a team, so yeah, we’ll see.”
Mokoena has scored five goals with three assists in 28 games since making his senior international debut under Stuart Baxter at the age of 21 in March 2018.
