Mofokeng For AFCON? Riveiro Offers Thoughts

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has suggested that teenage midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng could have something to offer for Bafana Bafana.

Ahead of the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the 19-year-old has been one of the most talked about talents in the DStv Premiership.

Having spent a couple of weeks training with Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, his stock rose even further and his confidence was notably sky-high upon his return to Mayfair.

“All of them [are ready for AFCON], we have talent in the team, we have many South African players in our squad, showing they are competitive but in the individual case of Rele, I think the only doubt people can have is his age and experience,” Riveiro said when asked if Mofokeng could offer Bafana options at AFCON.

“But if he gets the chance he will have an opportunity to show if he has the capacity… we as his coaches [at Pirates], we feel he’s a talented player who understands football very well, he needs to improve, very young and needs to understand other things – as I said about Karim [Kimvuidi].

“Sometimes talent is not enough to cover everything this game requires but he’s working hard, he’s working very well and I’m sure whenever he gets a chance, if it’s this year or next year, he’s not going to disappoint anybody, he’s a football player.”

Mofokeng has featured in 17 out of a possible 23 games for Pirates, with three games missed during his time in England.
