Bafana Bafana right-back Thapelo Morena has spoken about the warnings from national team coach Hugo Broos in the ongoing qualifiers saying the coach didn’t want to leave anything late or to chance.
Bafana face South Sudan in their final 2025 AFCON in Cape Town on Tuesday after securing qualification for next year’s continental showpiece after beating Uganda 2-0 away.
The Mamelodi Sundowns man came off the bench to score the opener before Patrick Maswanganyi sealed the game late on as Broos’ charges moved top with 11 points while the Cranes dropped to second spot in Group K with 10 points.
Morena spoke to iDiski Times senior writer Velile Mnyandu in edition 176 of the newspaper where he said the coach has reminded his charges of what happened against Ghana when they were trying to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And with how Bafana performed in Ivory Coast in the 2023 event, all the players want to taste that again.
“He even once spoke about I think the World Cup, the World Cup game [qualifier] against Ghana when we played away,” Morena told iDiski Times.
“So, it’s some of the things that he is showing us that there are possibilities and there’s also disadvantages because if we are going to try to fight to the last game, things might happen. If we do it now, you know automatically we have everything in our hands.
“Also, as players, we know how football is. So, we are also trying our level best to put our minds right and obviously there’s no one who doesn’t want to go to the AFCON after the experience we had. So yeah, I think that’s the most important thing.
“But what he also spoke about is never taking whatever happened in previous games into a new game because it’s a different game and we have to win.”
