Bafana Bafana attacking midfielder Themba Zwane described the night of earning his 50th national team cap as “special”.
Zwane ran onto the pitch at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium for his half century of appearances and was equally influential as South Africa thumped Congo Brazzaville 5-0 in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Friday evening.
The Mamelodi Sundowns maestro made his national team debut back in May 2014 against Australia, netting 12 goals having made 48 starts with eight substitute appearances.
In his post-match TV interview, the 35-year-old said it was a special occasion while also thanking his teammates for getting the job done and also taking time to applaud coach Hugo Broos for getting the team back to a competitive level.
“Thank you so much. I feel good and it was special to me,” said Mshishi on SABC TV.
“And thanks to my teammates who put in all the hard work, and we won the game. Yeah obviously, for the last four to five years, we’ve been struggling up and down, but thanks to the coach, he managed to put the team together and try to focus.
“I mean we’re all on the same page and doing well as a team and we are happy.”
Bafana travel to Congo for the away leg tie on Tuesday, 15 October, with hope of wrapping up qualification for next year’s event.
